Bikes Breaking the Rules

I fully support it.  Look, we have a whole transportation infastructure built up around the idea of moving people in cars, as fast as possible, in as large of numbers as possible.  And if people riding bike break those rules, so be it.  Streetsblog got it right when they said that cyclists need more safety protections – protections at the core of transportation infastructure, not just in helmet laws.  Helmets are important (I wear one), but they only protect you against minor, single person crashes, and not the catastrophic collisions that occur between cyclists and cars.

Considering the state of the world environmentally, every single policy decision – be it in infastructure, or law enforcement – needs to be directed at the cause of averting total climate crisis.  Cars, and the organization of transprotation in the city, crate a much more fundamental threat to wellbeing than rule-breaking cyclists ever could.

  1. Do you know what is way more dangerous than bikes that break the rules? CARS THAT BREAK THE RULES!! Srsly, does it reeeally take that much effort to flick on your turn signal or check your rearview mirror before you turn?

  2. if bikes are going to live in a sustainable way alongside cars, we’re going to have to figure out how to stay safe in too-small bike lanes, how to slow down and wait for the green light, how not to be jerks to pedestrians. but if we’re going to piss people off and make it serious that it’s cars v. bikes (to what end? – goverments ❤ cars and pedestrians are usually anti-bike) we can keep breaking rules. i think my thoughts on this are in the process of changing hard…

however, there’s something to be said about the inherent enjoyment of breaking the law when cars (generally) don’t – talking about running lights, not about turn signals.

  3. ALTHOUGH I HAVE SEEN ABOUT 20 CARS RUN LIGHTS IN BK IN THE LAST WEEK AND IT’S PISSING ME OFF.
